Resolved Resolutions

One of my new year's resolutions was to add more textures and trends into our home.  These are a few of the new things that have ended up in our home this past month...

I really like modern and sleek looks but somehow my house always ends up with an array of eccletic pieces, throwing off my mission.

We also have completed the major installations we wanted to do this year in the home.  Mr A installed the last storm door yesterday.  In the cold.

Friend vs Acquaintance

You know when you have something heavy on your heart and you just have to let it out?  Well, that's what I'm doing with today's post.
Not to sound conceited or egotistical, but if I consider you a "friend," that is a high compliment in my life.  The friends I have in my life are ones that will last a lifetime.  See, I'm not your average friend.  I won't call every day, actually there might be times when we won't talk for months (particularly if we live states apart), I may forget your birthday, and it will take years for me to tell you a secret .  But those things will be worth it.  I will always have a shoulder for you to cry on, I will always have an open ear, I will forever cherish our memories, I will think of you often (more than you will know), we will always pick up where we left off, and no matter the disagreement, I will always be your friend.  I have a handful of these friendships and because of that I feel blessed.  It's not the quantity but the quality.
Lately, I feel that some people I thought were "friends" really aren't.  I'm starting to see some true colors and when I do I back away.  I've felt taken advantage of.  I've seen too many instances of fake-ness and fickleness. I was foolish to have let you in and it was unfortunate that after I did, I realized who you really were.  Therefore consider your status to be demoted to acquaintance.  I'm going to save my energy for the true friends in my life.

Just a Little Elbow Grease

There have been a few features we've wanted to add to our house for a year and we finally got them done.  This past weekend we installed a full glass storm door for the front (we were going to add one to the back door too but the door we purchased was 4" too wide, somebody (me) forgot to pay attention to the dimensions), a mini blind to our bathroom window (the makeshift sheer made me extremely self conscious when I was naked while dark outside, because I just know a neighbor probably got a show at least once), and ceiling fans in both the sweaty sleepers' bedrooms.  Mr A was definitely in his element this weekend doing all of this handy work.

Artsy Fartsy

We're home after a 6 day trip up to IL.  I hardly took any pictures, other than our visit to St Louis' City Museum. I was enjoying being with family too much to pull out the camera.  As always, we had a nice visit to my hometown.  It's not very often Mr A gets to join us, so I was happy he could this trip.  My mom took a day off of work on Friday and we all drove to St Louis to spend the day at City Museum.  It's amazing the creativeness that is in that building!

Taking in Nature

The weather has been so bi polar for January.  We took advantage of it today, with a high of 54 degrees, by driving to Land Between the Lakes.  Mr A has been there quite a few times to fish, but this was the boys and my first visit.  What a beautiful place and I couldn't help but wonder how it must be in the other seasons.  If you aren't familiar with the area, it is a large national recreation area that sits between two lakes, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, in the states of Tennessee and Kentucky.  It is an open campsite, with organized camping grounds as well.  There is a plantetarium, 1800s settlement, bison & elk prairie, welcome centers, nature center, etc.

We started our adventure with a little lunch at a picnic area

Along our drive, we discovered bison

B was very good at pronouncing "buffalo" clearly and tired to lure them closer with his leaf.

The views were so peaceful.

Mr A felt right at home

We drove along the prairie and stumbled upon elk and more bison

On the way home we had to stop to fish.

The Impact of Lyrics

This week seems to be "annoy Mom as much as we can and let's see how far we can push her before she blows!"  Well, I have blown up more times than even I can handle.

Here are some examples:

One too many toddler temper tantrums...and I don't put "temper" lightly with this child.  When B is mad, he is m.a.d.!  (keep in mind, he's only 2)  His tantrums involve throwing/chucking things and hitting (which is more like a smack, you know the hit that kind of burns afterwards).  And during his fits, he has the strength of a gorilla...he is a fierce, angry albino gorilla.  I'm finally starting to seek advice through research on this one, I've tried everything and am at a loss.  He is sooooo different from his older brother, which brings me to my next example...

Vomit.  With this child, C, I have had my fair share of dealing with throw up.  From backseat emesis to public episodes that cause pure mortification to surprise mid-night wake ups of being covered in warm nastiness (both him and me).  Over the years, it has decreased a lot.  However, since this was "hell week for mom,"  he decided to perform another routine while at the dinner table after eating a piece of roast (that he so wonderfully dubbed "Woolly Mammoth hair" before taking a bite). And as if cleaning up vomit just after consuming a plate full of dinner wasn't enough, his brother threw in the side performance of one of his oh so lovely gorilla tantrums...awesome!

So, needless to say, my children have been renamed "heathens" for the week.  (Don't you dare judge me!)

But today something changed my view of thinking for 4 minutes and 42 seconds.  A song.  A song that has a powerful hold on my subconscious forever.  As I was getting ready for the day, the 2 heathens were in front of me fighting over a Hungry, Hungry Hippo game; when all of a sudden, their words and actions were replaced with visions of white light, wings, and halos.   (They looked like sweet, innocent angels if you didn't grasp my picture)  The metamorphosis began with the music of "Godspeed" by the Dixie Chicks.  See, when I first heard that song I immediately thought how sweet of a song about a son.  And then when I later found out I was pregnant with a boy, I was drawn back to the song.  I listened to it a lot when I was pregnant, daydreaming of the growing baby inside of me.  I would even do the whole tv thing and put headphones on my belly playing that song.  Then when C was a newborn, I would sing it to him, and again when he was a toddler refusing to sleep (it would always seem to calm him down). I never really thought about the impact a song can have over me.

One of the lyrics that has always stuck out to me is, "God hears 'amen' where ever we are."  It has definitely made an impact on my life.  Especially for my boys because I want them to know that no matter what life brings you, you are never alone; God is always there and He has a plan for you.

Later in the day I began to think of other song lyrics that have had a lasting impression on me. My senior quote in our yearbook was "It's not where but who you are with that really matters" from Dave Matthews Band's "Best of What's Around" song.  At seventeen years old, I hadn't quite experienced what that lyric meant. It was almost like a presage into the future because my adult life has been based on that quote, particularly in this military lifestyle.  It applies so much to me because no matter where in the world I am or the conditions I am in, if I am with those that I love, it's all that truly matters.

I know I probably went off on a wild tangent.  This all made sense in my head.  But I guess what I am trying to convey is the intensity a song can hold.  It can hold memories, change your mood, cause you to look from another perspective, give you hope, etc.  After all, one song today changed my whole week!!  They may have been heathens, but they're my little blessings.

Fresh Start 2012

A new year, new beginnings.  Isn't crazy how a new calender years makes us want to change ourselves for the better?  It's just an excuse.  If we really wanted to change things, we'd start any day!  Oh well, I will be like most Americans and start the new year with some resolutions....
  • Be a better mother.  Be more proactive, patient, sympathetic, loving, fun, teach by example
  • Go back to school.  I tend to put others first, this year I need to be a little more selfish.
  • Focus on family, both immediate and extended.  Friends come and go, family is forever.
  • Stay physically active.  I could say I want to lose weight, which I do, but staying fit is more important...the weight will lose itself in the meantime.
  • Eat healthier.  Drink more water and incorporate more veggies & fruits, especially family and children's meals.
  • Be more cautious with money.  Saving would be nice, but spending wisely is more realistic.  One will turn into the other.
  • Work on the house.
    • Need to add more to the inside with furniture, trendy accessories, wall art, textures.
    • Paint the interior with an eggshell finish or washable flat.  Marks on the walls drive me nuts
    • Paint the front door
    • Add crown molding to the bedrooms and bathrooms
    • Install ceiling fans in the kids' rooms
    • Purchase glass/screen doors for front and rear entrances
    • Landscape
  • This is our 10th year of marriage.  Spend more "us" time and enjoy each other.
  • Dress trendier.  I need to get out of the jeans and shirt slump.
  • Don't be so judgemental.  Over the years I've learned not to judge someone the first time I meet them.
  • Don't hold grudges and get upset easily by others.  I am in charge of my own happiness.
  • Go on a family vacation.  A real one.
  • Enjoy my last year as a SAHM to two.  In the fall, C will start kindergarten.  I need to make this year memorable to both of us.
