Thirty One

The man of the house turned thirty one yesterday.  Gosh, seems just like yester-year he was turning 22.  I must say he is one of those men that gets better looking the older he gets.  Not that he is hard on the eyes to me ever, but he is aging very nicely.

Jer hates a big fuss over his birthday.  He always wants it to be "just another day."  And definitely wants me to keep my big mouth shut and don't tell anyone that it's his birthday (i.e. his coworkers, servers in restaurants, etc).  However, through past experiences I know that he wants it on the "down low" but that doesn't mean to skimp out on gifts, even though he acts like it's no big deal.

Well, by golly I got it right this year!  He had his "normal" day at work, a nice, low-key celebration at home, and a big surprise gift.  Those who know me, especially when I was a kid, know that I get very excited about gifts and have a tendency to spill the beans.  Not yesterday. Nope. It was a first and it felt so good.  I had let my diarrhea of the mouth give it away last week that I (along with my mom chipping in) wanted to get him a new recliner .  We went Saturday to get it, only to find out it would be a 4-6 week wait.  Mr Impatient wasn't having it.  He had already gone ahead and ordered some five finger shoes, so I gave up and told him I would just let him have money but since he bought those, then that was his gift.

As the day approached for his birthday, I thought of the times he had surprised me with thoughtful gifts, even when I told him he didn't need to buy me anything so we could save our money.  I wanted to do something just as thoughtful.  Afterall, he happily lets the kids and I spend most of his hard working money. It's the least I could do and he deserves a thoughtful gift on his birthday!

The man loves music.  He also loved his iPod.  Past tense because last fall when his truck was broken into, his iPod was stolen.  I wanted to get him a new one for Christmas but with moving and traveling for the holidays, it just wasn't in the budget.  In the meantime, he has made due with his shuffle and has never once complained.  That was it!  I had to get him the iPod Touch.  Thanks to mom's contribution of half, we bought him one.

When Birthday Boy came home from work, he was serenaded with a loud "Happy Birthday" song by me and a "Oh Daddy we forgot your cake!" by C.  C was sick all day, so it was a very big possibility to have forgotten his cake.  Little did he know, a month ago I asked my friend Becky if she would make him a cake with a bass on it.  Being the great man that he is, he told us it was okay and no biggie. Love that man!  I pulled out the cake and a smile stretched along his face.  We ate dinner, he read our b-day cards, enjoyed some delicious cake, and as we started to clean up I told him that I did in fact, buy him a little something.  Pulling out a gift wrapped shirt box, he was a little hesitant to be disappointed by a wallet or ugly shirt I bought him.  He slowly unwrapped the tissue covered little box that was inside and couldn't believe his eyes.  At that moment, I had one of the best feelings in my heart.  Now I know why people keep gifts a surprise! He looked up at me, then back down, then back up and said, "are you sure??"  He knows how frugal my mom and I can be.  I assured him that yes, I was sure.  He said it was quite possibly the best birthday he has ever had.  :)
